Following his viral Oscars slap, Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The actor said in a statement on Friday, April 1st that his actions were unforgivable and that he had denied other candidates and honorees the opportunity to celebrate.

He stated
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” the statement read.

I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

During the awards show on Sunday night, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada, having a bald head.
The star actor laughed at the joke but later went stale. He walked up to the stage and slapped Rock Chris.
The Academy’s president, David Rubin, said he accepted Smith’s resignation but that the disciplinary process will continue.
Even as the Academy recently announced plans for disciplinary action against him, the actor has apologized to the Academy, Rock, and fellow attendees.
