Nigerian Entertainment News: “Why My Dad Bought Me Out Of Record Label Contract”– Davido Shares His Story
Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has shared the reason behind his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, intervening to end his initial record label contract
The singer revealed he signed with Black Diamond Promotions in 2011, but his father stepped in after hearing an early version of his breakout hit, Dami Duro.
Chief Adeleke decided to buy him out of the agreement so Davido could retain ownership of his music masters.
Davido spoke about this after Tosin Ashafa, the head of his former record label, recounted the story. Ashafa had joined a trend on X (formerly Twitter) where users shared random music facts.
He tweeted:
“most random music fact, Ashafa wrote, “I signed @davido to his 1st Offical contract under black diamond promotions with Cecil Hammond/another silent partner, we hired @GodwinTom to manage him .Dr Adeleke realized David was really serious with pushing his music without him, reached out to us and bought us out.”
Reposting the tweet, Davido wrote,
“So much respect to you guys for allowing me walk!! Just know u were part of something that turned out to be phenomenal!!”
An X user named @Choiji_ES stated that the event took place in 2019, but Davido responded to this claim,
“No I signed the contract in 2011 … was a good contract not bad ! But daddy wanted me to have 100 percent of whatever I was doing ! Especially after I played him first cut of Dami duro video in his office ! He knew it was game time!!!”
Following this move, Davido and his family established HKN Music. Later, he branched out from HKN to launch his own record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).
This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Davido’s remarkable journey in the Nigerian music industry.
