Nigerian Entertainment News: Rema Wins Big, Burna Boy Loses Three Awards At 2023 MTV EMAs
Rema, a renowned Nigerian musician, secures the inaugural title in the “Best Afrobeats” division at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards
Remarkably, the organizers introduced a fresh section, “Best Afrobeats,” for this year’s ceremony.
The initial nominees encompassed French sensation Aya Nakamura, alongside Nigerian vocalists Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
Despite the cancellation of the award event due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, the victors were disclosed on November 6, 2023.
Rema triumphed as the “Best Afrobeats” winner, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz received the accolade for “Best African Act.”
In the “Best Collaboration” category, Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” didn’t clinch the top spot, conceding to Jung Kook and Latto’s “Seven.”
Notably, Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, went home empty-handed, missing out on three honors: “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Live Performer.”
This setback occurred shortly after he lost all seven nominations for the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
The 2023 MTV EMAs saw Taylor Swift lead the winners’ circle, securing three awards in the categories of “Best Video,” “Best Artist,” and “Best Live.”
