Nigerian Entertainment News: Burna Boy Sets Record as First African Artist with Six Consecutive Grammy Nominations
Globally renowned Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has once again made waves, becoming the first African artist to secure Grammy nominations six years in a row
Since 2018, the ‘African Giant’ hitmaker has consistently earned Grammy nods—an extraordinary feat for an African musician. To date, Burna Boy boasts a total of 11 nominations and one Grammy win.
This year, his acclaimed track ‘Higher’ has been nominated in the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammy Awards.
Meanwhile, Nigerian R&B sensation Tems has also achieved a historic milestone with three nominations for the upcoming 67th Grammy Awards, making her the most-nominated Nigerian artist this season.
Her nominations include Best African Music Performance, Best Global Album, and Best R&B Song.
Tems is now the first Nigerian female artist to have an album nominated for a Grammy, with her debut project Born In The Wild recognized in the Best Global Album category. Furthermore, she is the first African artist ever nominated in the R&B category for her single Burning.
These achievements make her the first African female lead artist to receive nominations outside of the global categories, setting a record with six Grammy nominations overall.
With three nods this year, Tems is now second only to Burna Boy in the record for most Grammy nominations received by a Nigerian artist in a single Grammy season, following his four nominations at the 66th Grammy Awards.
